Hillary Rodham Clinton was born in Chicago on October 26, 1947 to Dorothy and Hugh Rodham. Her father, the son of English Immigrants, worked hard from an early age to escape the working class life, graduated from Pennsylvania State University, and earned prosperity in the textile wholesale trade. Hillary spent her childhood in Park Ridge, Illinois, an affluent suburb of Chicago. She enjoyed an active childhood, participating in sports, church, and student government. A member of the National Honor Society, she excelled at school, graduating from Maine High School in 1964 as a National Merit Scholarship finalist.

Hillary entered Wellesley College Massachusetts in 1965 where she underwent a political transformation. Like her father, she was a Republican and served as head of the local Young Republicans Chapter during her first year of college. However, by the time she graduated with a degree in political science, she was a Democrat supporting Eugene McCarthy for president.

Hillary entered Yale Law School in 1969. She conducted research for the Yale Child Study Center and served on the Board of Editors of Yale Law Review. Hillary's first formal expression of her interest in children advocacy issues were through several articles published on children’s rights in the Yale Law Review. Yale is also the place where she first met Bill Clinton. The President often recalls how they met in the library when she strode up to him and said, "If you're going to keep staring at me, I might as well introduce myself."

Hillary graduated from Yale Law School in 1973, and began working for the Children Defense Fund in Cambridge Massachusetts. She later moved to Arkansas with Bill Clinton where he would pursue his political career. On October 11, 1975, she married Bill Clinton, but kept her maiden name. That same year, she joined the faculty of the University of Arkansas Law School, and in 1976, she took a position at the Rose Law Firm, focusing on intellectual property and doing child advocacy cases pro bono. In 1979, she was made full partner of Rose Law Firm, the first woman ever to do so.

Bill Clinton was first elected as Governor of Arkansas in 1978, making Hillary the First Lady of Arkansas, which she held for a period of 12 years, although not consecutively. As First Lady, Hillary chaired the Arkansas Educational Standards Committee and the Rural Health Advisory Committee. She was successful in both roles, implementing new testing standards for teachers, and assisting parents to tutor their children in preschool through a program entitled "Arkansas' Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youth." She was named Arkansas Woman of the Year in 1983 and Arkansas Mother of the Year in 1984.

Hillary Clinton is currently a Democratic United States Senator for the state of New York. She is in her first term which began January 3, 2001.

First Lady Hillary Clinton

With Bill Clinton's successful bid for the Presidency in 1992, Hillary became the First Lady of the United States in 1993. As First Lady, she took an active role in policy, which she has been both praised and criticized. She focused her attention on women and children issues, and most notably for her attempt at shaping national heath care policy. In 1993, President Clinton appointed Hillary to head the Task Force on National Health Care Reform, which proposed a comprehensive plan to provide universal health care for all American citizens. Despite a Democratic controlled congress, the plan lacked the support needed to reach the floor in either the house or senate, and was eventually abandoned by the Clinton's in the autumn of 1995.

Hillary proved more effective in our advocacy of women and children issues, sponsoring the Children's Health Insurance Program and the Adoption and Safe Families Act, the latter she considered one of her greatest accomplishments as First Lady.

Senator Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton was elected as Senator of New York on November 7, 2000. She is the first First Lady to be elected to the United States Senate. She serves on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee; the Environment and Public Works Committee; the Special Committee on Aging; and the Senate Armed Services Committee. She chairs the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, responsible for communicating with the public about key issues before Congress. She was re-elected to the Senate in 2006 by a large margin, 67% of the total vote and carrying all but 4 of New York's 62 counties.
