Netscape Communications Corporation was the publisher of the Netscape web browsers. The company started in 1994 when it first released the Netscape browser in beta. The company was acquired by AOL toward the end of 1998, but was eventually disbanded in July 2003. However, the Netscape brand is still in use today, and still provides a number of services and products.

Netscape Browser

Netscape first released its browser in October 1994 and was called Mosaic Netscape, but soon after was renamed to Netscape Navigator due to trademark issues. Although the netscape browser was instrumental in popularisation of the internet, the company never generated meaningful amounts of cash. The company went public on August 9, 1995, with an initial offering of $28 per share, and ended the first day of trading at $75. Netscape Navigator peaked towards the end of 1995 with over 80% market share. As of May 2006, it has a 1% market share.
